Memorial Cup Cancelled

Memorial Cup tournament scrapped for second straight year

MEDICINE HAT, AB – For the second year in a row, a Memorial Cup champion will not be crowned in the Canadian Hockey League.

To little surprise, the CHL came out with a statement on Tuesday morning confirming the 2021 Memorial Cup tournament has been cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League have been able to successfully return to play, the Ontario Hockey League has still not gotten off the ground with discussions continuing with the Ontario government.

Travel has been limited for those WHL and QMJHL teams back in action as well, with only divisional play being allowed out west and bubbles set up in Quebec and the Maritimes.

There is still no word yet if playoffs will be held in the WHL, with the Medicine Hat Tigers holding a 9-3-1 record in 13 games before their season was put on pause last week thanks to a positive case of COVID-19 on the Calgary Hitmen.

The CHL says further decisions on the timing and location of the 2022 Memorial Cup tournament will be unveiled at a later date.
