WHL postpones Tigers weekend series following positive test on Hitmen

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Western Hockey League has announced all three Medicine Hat Tigers games this weekend against the Lethbridge Hurricanes will be postponed due to a positive case of COVID-19 on the Calgary Hitmen.

The WHL has deemed the Tigers as a close contact of the Hitmen, after playing them three times last week and as recently as Monday night.

All team activities for Medicine Hat have been suspended, while their series against the Lethbridge Hurricanes has been put on the shelf.

However, there have been no positive cases of COVID-19 identified in the Tigers cohort to this point.

The Tigers were set to visit the Hurricanes on Friday night, before returning home to Co-op Place for the rematch on Saturday evening.

The three-game series was also supposed to have wrapped up back in Lethbridge on Monday evening.

Medicine Hat’s next scheduled game now isn’t until April 23 when they host the Red Deer Rebels, as next weekend is their final bye week of the WHL season.

Through 13 games, the Tigers hold a 9-3-1 record and sit in second place in the Central Division with 19 points.

In a release, the WHL has also confirmed positive cases on the Kelowna Rockets and Vancouver Giants. Kelowna had already been observing a 14-day mandatory suspension of activities due to a series of previous positive tests, while Vancouver will be allowed to continue playing as the positive case in question had their case identified while under quarantine.

The WHL has also announced there will be no further comments either from the league or Tigers on Calgary’s positive test.
