MEDICINE HAT, AB– A first-of-its-kind street store offering much-needed necessities managed to help dozens of people in need on Saturday.

Tables were set up offering clothing, food, hygiene kits, diapers and other supplies for the city’s vulnerable.

The street store was organized by MyCityCare, a new charity organization operated in partnership with Bridge Church. The street store event was MyCityCare’s first event in the city, and was held outside Bridge Church.

“ Today’s event was awesome, already we had over 150 people, probably 100 families come through and basically take their pick of what they wanted whether it was clothes, emergency food hampers, and we also handed out Easter food hampers,” said Dave Maneschyn of MyCityCare Medicine Hat.

Before the event began, people were lining up eager to get their hands on some necessities at no cost. The items people were in need of most was surprising, Maneschyn said.

“The majority of people that we had come through here have come specifically for clothing. We do have some emergency food hampers that are put together but the majority of people we have seen have specifically come for clothes,” he said.

The next MyCityCare Street Store is set to take place on June 5. The organization will be partnering up with The Mustard Seed to provide items to families in the flats and surrounding area.

MyCityCare is also working on its next latest initiative. The Cinderella Project aims to provide teens from low-income families the opportunity to celebrate graduation.

Donations of dresses, tuxedos, and shoes are being accepted. The organization is also partnering with local photographers and hairdressers to help make graduation an experience that any teen can celebrate, no matter their household income.

Any donations for the Cinderella Project and the street store can be dropped off at Bridge Church between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
