MEDICINE HAT AB– Members of the MHPS braced some chilly waters this morning with the help of the Medicine Hat Fire Department.

The executive team along with one constable each stood in a row before facing the
the pressure of a fire hose.

Once the water approached, even a police shield could barely withstand the water.

Within seconds, the officers were soaked. But it was all to raise money for the 10th annual Polar Plunge. The money raised goes towards supporting the Special Olympics.

“There’s been a real strong connection with the Special Olympics, their athletes and law enforcement so there are programs throughout Alberta and throughout Canada, real national-wide programs, so police services around the country are big supporters, lots of events and really something that is dear to our hearts,” MHPS chief Mike Worden said.

Due to the pandemic, the polar plunge had to make some adjustments. Normally officers would plunge into a pond. Instead, they recruited the fire department to help.

“It’s a nuanced version of the polar plunge and something we thought would be unique,” Chief Worden said.

So far $2500 has been raised. Donations can be made online and are being accepted until March 31.
