Pink Shirt Day a reminder of empathy, compassion & kindness

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Today (Feb.24) is Pink Shirt Day, a day where many wear pink to show their support for anti-bullying initiatives.

By wearing an article of pink clothing, it’s a reminder of empathy, compassion, and kindness.

Schools across the country take part, and St. Mary’s School in Medicine Hat is repping the pink today.

Principal Nick Gale is new to the school this year and he’s really impressed with the school community.

He says St. Mary’s does a great job of embracing the individual on a daily basis.

Gale says this year’s theme is ‘lift each other up’.

“That’s really been our focus all year long, especially in the pandemic that we’re in right now is to really focus on keeping our community strong and building each other up and not tearing each other down because we all need a little bit of that,” Gale told Chat News.

Grade 7 student Taya Kornelson focuses on being kind on a daily basis, “It means not making fun of people maybe if they mess up or something because everyone messes up, even I mess up because everyone does.”

There is a provincial Bullying Helpline if you need assistance, that can be reached by calling 1-888-456-2323 or through the online chat available at alberta.ca/BullyingChat.

There are resources available on the Government of Alberta’s website that can assist. Please visit alberta.ca/Bullying.

Pink Shirt Day has been running for 14 years across the country.
