Garden centres preparing for possible seed shortage

DUNMORE, AB – We may be in the middle of winter, but garden centres are preparing for the 2021 growing season.

And they expect it to be another busy year, with a possible seed shortage already.

Joyce Swaren, Owner of Blondie’s Gift & Garden Centre says garden vegetables and herb seeds are popular.

And her customers have been asking for seeds since Christmas.

Swaren over-booked her seed supply to make sure she is stocked up for the season.

But, she has been getting messages from her suppliers that there might be a shortage of seeds this year due to freight and demand.

Swaren says her seeds are expected to arrive in a week, her suppliers said she should be okay but time will tell.

“Last year they would have sold out so much, but you would have thought they would have a re-harvest time or a backup. They have freezer barns full of seeds, but it was crazy last year.”

Some of Swaren’s suppliers are located in Lethbridge, Peace River, and Manitoba.
