Polar Plunge going virtual for 2021

Jan 11, 2021 | 2:19 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The people behind the annual Polar Plunge weren’t about to let the 10th year go by quietly.

And so like so many other events, it will go virtual this year.

Usually held in March at the pond near the Family Leisure Centre, Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Alberta is moving online due to potential health restrictions at the time and to ensure the safety of participants.

“While it is unfortunate that we will not be able to plunge in person, a virtual event gives us the opportunity to reach more individuals looking to participate in the cause,” said Johnny Byrne, Special Olympics Alberta CEO. “It has been an incredible 10 years, and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with all of our supporters and you at our virtual opening ceremony.”

People are encouraged to have fun with their plunge this year, with organizers suggesting using a kiddie pool plunge or ice buckets or making snow angels.

The opening ceremonies will take place online on Jan. 31 and plunge season will wrap up on March 13.

Last year, Polar Plungers across Alberta raised almost $200,000 for Special Olympics Alberta.
