More Male Mentors needed

January is mentoring month for Big Brothers Big Sisters

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The month of January is Mentoring Month across the country for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

It’s a time to celebrate and appreciate mentors and the work they do with kids and young teens ranging from 6 to 16 years old.

Executive director in Medicine Hat Holly Stadnicki says mentors play a positive role in a child’s life.

And at this time, mentors are meeting with their match virtually, by text, or with a phone call.

Currently, the local chapter has 41 traditional matches, along with 7 other programs.

But Stadnicki says they are looking for more mentors, especially males.

She says the commitment is 1-2 hours per week but they are flexible.

“We have about 25 children on our waitlist right now. That’s 14 boys and 11 girls. We know that boys typically stay on the waitlist three times as long as the girls because we have a shortage of male mentors. That’s not just a Medicine Hat situation, that’s right across the country. However, we would really appreciate male mentors to step up and just volunteer, have some fun.”

Stadnicki says their in-school mentoring program is recognized as an essential service in schools, and that will get going again with kids going back to school today.

To inquire about being a mentor visit their website.

Though Big Brothers Big Sisters Medicine Hat staff are working from home right now, they moved into their new location on 1002 Allowance Ave. SE. Stadnicki says it is a ground-level location and once restrictions are lifted they will have on-site programming.

The organization was on Kingsway Avenue SE on the 2nd floor, and they wanted to be accessible to everyone with the new spot.

January 17 is International Mentoring Day on social media to talk about and share a mentor who has impacted your life.

January 29 is Thank a Mentor on social media for all ages.

Stadnicki says to use the hashtag #bbbsmedhat when you tell your mentoring stories on social media.
