Hat Smart launches 2021 rebate program

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city’s popular energy-efficiency program is once again open for applications for financial subsidies to help Hatters do everything from replacing aging air conditioners and furnaces to installing new home solar panels.

Jaret Dickie, the city’s utilities business support manager, says the rebates ranging from $350 for new energy-efficient AC units and furnaces to a maximum of $6,000 for solar panels are popular.

But for those embarking on residential renovations, Hat Smart’s home evaluation rebate might be the best choice, he says.

Dickie says up to $400 is available for those who are looking to see where energy costs can be saved before renos start.

“The energy evaluation that will be done is a tool that will educate the customer to say, ‘hey, this is my home – where am I losing heat, where am I losing power or air conditioning,’ and help them save money and make those changes,” said Dickie. “If they are doing renovations, it’s the perfect time to find out where their best dollar invested would be.”

In addition to rebates for solar panels, AC units, furnaces and evaluations, Hat Smart is providing rebates of $100 per gigajoule of energy savings up to $10,000 for new homes built above “typical” new home builds.

The Hat Smart program is funded through a levy put on high natural gas and electrical customers.
