MEDICINE HAT, AB- Fourteen-year-old Daniel Bachmeier could hardly contain his excitement when he pulled up in his father’s van to a tree full of gifts on his front porch.

“Hey, who is that on the tree, is that Donkey Kong?” Daniel asked as he excitedly wheeled himself to the tree.

For Daniel, Christmas and his 15th birthday came early thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation.

“It’s wonderful to just bring some joy, bring some happiness in such a gloomy time with COVID-19. It is just a real light in our world right now to be able to grant wishes to children. It’s a very joyous time at Christmas,” said Donna Serr of the Make a Wish Foundation .

Due to the pandemic, Daniel’s original wish to attend the Monster Jam truck finals in Florida had to change, but the Make a Wish Foundation wanted to ensure that they could still surprise him, and fufill his new wish of a PlayStation 5.

Thanks to the Sony Canada Charitable Foundation, Daniel’s wish came true. His jaw dropped as he unwrapped the highly coveted gaming system.

Along with the PlayStation 5, Daniel also received a number of games, a 55-inch T.V and a sound system.

“I’m lost for words. For them to provide wishes during a pandemic is just absolutely unbelievable:” said Daniel’s mom Liz Bachmeier.

For Daniel, the gifts could not have come at a better time. The 14-year-old has quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy. He already went through major surgery in 2011 and is preparing to go through another one to improve his mobility.

His mother Liz says the pandemic hasn’t made life easy for the fourteen-year-old.

“He misses going to Tigers hockey games he misses swimming, hanging out with his friends. He feels he can’t even go see grandma. Grandma is in a nursing home. He kind of feels like he is being punished and it is really difficult because he can’t really do anything,”

Daniel has always loved video games and his mom is hopeful the gifts will not only fulfill a wish but help her son in the long run.

“It helps his brain, his mind as well. Thinking skills because he can’t go out and play with his friends, he can’t go out for walks, so he loves to play,” she said,
