‘A large majority’ of Hatters in compliance with mask bylaw: MHPS

Dec 7, 2020 | 4:57 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB- With the mandatory mask-bylaw now in full effect, the MHPS received a number of calls this weekend in relation to the bylaw.

In total, the police service received 24 calls for service from Friday, December 4, to Sunday, December 6. Over half of those calls, according to Insp. Brent Secondiak related to bylaw clarification and exemptions.

Police also responded to five potential breaches of the bylaw. To date, no tickets have been issued.

“ It was more contentious on Friday, and then our calls went down over the weekend, but it does appear that a large majority of Hatters are complying with the bylaw which is excellent and there are some people who can’t wear a mask because of medical reasons so it is a high percentage of people that are complying,” Secondiak said.

Insp. Brent Secondiak encourages anyone with questions about the mask bylaw to contact police.

In terms of reporting any COVID-19 related breeches, Secondiak advises the public to use reasonableness when it comes filing a complaint against someone, such as your neighbor.

“Of course if it looks like a serious breach of the order then absolutely give us a call. There are reasons still why one person might go to another person’s house for childcare, they are allowed in a house. A lot of healthcare (caregiver) reasons and you are still allowed to do several things under the provincial restrictions,” he said.
