REDCLIFF, AB- Highway 1 west of Redcliff has reopened to traffic after a cattle truck rolled into the ditch Sunday evening.

John McBain, Cypress County Fire Chief, said the truck was hauling 35 bulls to High River when it flipped on its side just before 6p.m. Sunday. Multiple emergency vehicles responded to the scene.

“ We had Box Springs attend with their apparatus personnel, along with Dunmore, they brought the emergency livestock trailer. We were able to set up some corrals and get the ones that were alive offloaded,” McBain said.

Eight cattle died at the scene. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital.

Two vehicles were also involved in a crash after hitting oncoming cattle on the road shortly after the accident.

McBain said members of the community pulled together to provide personal stock trailers and to help retrieve the cattle off the road.

Highway 1 westbound was closed for roughly three hours as crews worked to clear the accident.
