MEDICINE HAT, AB – The man convicted and sentenced last month to house arrest on a hate crime charge for distributing anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant material is appealing his conviction and sentence and is asking for a judge and jury trial.

This after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Loki Holger Hulgaard, 37, was originally charged in August 2018 after passing currency with anti-Semitic slurs written on it.

He eventually entered a guilty plea to willful promotion of hate.

That, following months of see-saw court appearances which saw Hulgaard try to withdraw his guilty plea, he was sentenced at Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Oct. 22 to a community sentence that includes an eight-month period of house arrest and four months of a daily curfew.

The sentence was a result of a joint defence, Crown submission.

In his appeal to the Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench, Hulgaard – acting in his own defence – says his guilty plea was not voluntarily entered, his lawyer didn’t provide informed advice and the sentence imposed contains conditions that are unreasonable and violate his freedom of expression.
