MEDICINE HAT, AB – A new solar project south of Medicine Hat is proving renewable energy can work in conjunction with oil and gas development.

Alberta Solar One is a $20-million project being built near Burdett by Enbridge which will employ 80 during its construction and producing 10.5 MW of electricity capacity or about the equivalent of enough power for 3,000 homes.

But it’s the 12,000 tonnes of reduced carbon emissions – which the company which is better know for pipelines than renewable energy – says makes the project attractive, says Alberta Solar One’s technical manager.

“We recognize there is an energy transition that is going on and we want to be part of that solution,” said Enbridge’s Lauren Andre. “We provide safe and reliable energy that we use every day and renewables, obviously, are an important component of that.”

Alberta Solar One is one of a number of renewable projects Enbridge has in Alberta and worldwide.

A similar-sized solar project, Chappice Lake Solar located north of Medicine Hat, received regulatory approval earlier this year.
