Penhold man charged for assault at Sept. 20 anti-racism event

Oct 8, 2020 | 8:48 AM

RCMP say their investigation into altercations that broke out after an anti-racism demonstration last month in Red Deer was disrupted has determined that three separate assaults took place.

The investigation by the Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) into the Sept. 20 demonstration at Rotary Recreation Park involved the review of numerous pieces of video evidence and interviews with witnesses.

Mounties say the first assault occurred while organizers were arriving to set-up for the event. RCMP were not yet on-site when it occurred but say they did speak with the victim upon their arrival.

The second assault took place during the event and video of it was posted online. RCMP say they did not witness this assault but that once officers became aware of what had happened, they separated the parties, provided assistance to the victim and identified the suspect.

While investigating the second assault, RCMP say they became aware of a third assault that remains under investigation.

Trevor Lyle Roy, 42, of Penhold has been charged with assault in relation to the first incident. He is scheduled to attend Red Deer provincial court on Nov. 17.

RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Deanna Fontaine did not say whether Roy was participating in the rally or there as a counter-protester.

The Red Deer RCMP GIS have requested a summons charging an individual with assault with a weapon in relation to the second incident. The name of the accused cannot be released until the summons has been issued by the courts and subsequently served.
