Live music slowly coming back to centre stage

Oct 2, 2020 | 3:17 PM

When Alberta’s top doctor announced last month that small indoor concerts could resume it was music to the ears of local performers, business owners and music lovers.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw made the announcement on Sept. 11 and just over a week later Cafe Verve had Greg Herman on stage.

Tonight, Connie Johns will perform at the Dunmore Road cafe and Craig Learmont is there next Friday.

Co-owner Betty Jean Cleland said it was lovely to have music back, and others felt the same.

“Our passion is having the music and the art so to be able to have that again was really lovely for sure,” said Cleland. “The musicians, I could just see it in their faces how hard it was not to be able to play and for people that haven’t been able to go out to hear live music, they were just so grateful and so appreciative.”

Cafe Verve started with an instrumental concert in July and have been waiting patiently for the go-ahead for voice concerts.

Cleland says they’ve treaded carefully through each step and have measures such as reservations only, capacity limits, masks and barriers at the till in place.

She adds if any guidelines change they will follow whatever guidelines need to be followed, but is hopeful they won’t need to take any backward steps.

“We’ve been very lucky here and hopefully that keeps up and we can keep going forward. We’re feeling very blessed that we could even reopen.”

Also tonight Mahoney will play at Ralph’s Texas Bar & Steakhouse and the Esplanade, Liquid Concert and Event Venue and the Redcliff Legion all have concerts scheduled in October.
