Crescent Heights band class makes music outdoors

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Over the last week and a half, neighbours of Crescent Heights High School and those passing by have been enjoying the musical talents of students.

With bus drivers, residents, and other classes stopping to listen.

The grade 9 band is one of many classes that are playing music outdoors.

Band director Curtis Perrin says at the start of the month, classes were playing percussion instruments in the band room but with no wind instruments.

When Alberta Health released new guidelines, the class moved outside because wind instruments were allowed again.

Perrin says they will stay outdoors for as long as the weather holds.

But when it gets colder and the class moves back inside, he says protective instrument coverings are required.

“Alberta Health mandates that when you’re playing (wind instruments) to use protective coverings. We use protective coverings over the bells of the instruments just to prevent the spread. So when we move inside we get those coverings on the instruments and keep on making noise.”

Perrin says one of the things he missed most after March 13 this year was making music together.

“So I’m glad that we’re back at it and I’m glad I have the chance to make music with my kids every day it’s a lot of fun.”

And the classes are getting used to practicing outdoors.

“I think at first they were a little suspicious of it and the first day they were kind of hesitant. But now I think we kind of left that shame at the door and we’re not worried about people driving by. We had a group of elementary school students stop by and listen. We don’t care we’re just making noise. We’re at the point where at this age making music together is an important thing at the middle school level so they’re just happy to be able to make music together.”

Perrin says they will have a concert of some form at the end of January.

Whether it’s in-person in the building or an online live-stream.
