Esplanade, Saamis Tepee to be lit tonight in support of the arts

Sep 22, 2020 | 12:25 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Esplanade and the Saamis Tepee will glow red this evening in support of performing arts professionals across Canada who have lost their livelihoods due to COVID-19.

The local landmarks will join others across the country in a national Day of Visibility organized by Live Event Community.

One hour after sundown from coast-to-coast, hundreds of venues and buildings will light their exteriors red to raise awareness for an industry that is still dark and will be one of the last to recover. Throughout the evening, images and video will be shared across social media using #LightUpLive/EclaironsLesScenes to boost visibility.

“We’ve all been affected by the pandemic, some more than others,” says Trampas Brown, superintendent facility operations & programming for community development with the City of Medicine Hat. “This is an opportunity to show our support to people working in culture that are struggling from the effects of COVID-19.”

In a release, the city says everyone is encouraged to show their support by checking out what the Esplanade is doing on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, by lighting a red light and use #LightUpLive/EclaironsLesScenes across social media.

Other Canadian sites to be lit include the Calgary Tower, Royal Theatre Victoria and Niagara Falls. A full list can be seen at lightuplive.ca.
