MEDICINE HAT, AB – A collision between two semi-trucks that saw a cattle liner rear ended saw a section of the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway shut down for much of Monday afternoon.

The collision occurred just before 2 p.m. when a white transport semi-truck collided with the rear of a cattle liner carrying an unknown number of cows.

First-responders from the city and county responded including the Cypress’ livestock emergency response unit as well as local cattlemen who showed up with 24-foot trailers to help transport cattle from the trailer.

Eyewitness Terry Rodgers says he was sitting on the bench outside the D & D Dinner in the Petro-Canada gas station when the collision occurred.

“I saw a white truck come barreling up. The other trucks were all stopped for the stop light and he came up,” said Rodgers. “At the very last second, I saw him turn and hit the back end of the trailer that has the cows in it. If he hadn’t hit that, he’d hit all the cars in the far lane.”

Rodgers said he saw the driver of the white semi get out and check on the driver of the cattle liner before being taken away in an ambulance.

First responders worked with cattlemen to remove cattle from the trailer by backing up to the cattle liners side door with 24-foot trailers and coxing the animals out.

According to witnesses at the scene, no cattle escaped but it is unknown if any were injured or killed in the collision which saw extensive damage to the cattle liner as well as the cab of the white truck.
