County set to reduce speed limits in hamlets

DUNMORE, AB – Cypress County councillors have passed first reading of a bylaw which will see speed limits in most of the hamlets reduced to 40 kilometres an hour.

A survey conducted of 340 county residents found a majority of residents in the municipality’s nine hamlets in favour of the reduction of the speed limit.

In a hamlet like Dunmore which has a lot of children but no sidewalks, resident Keith Horsburgh supports the move.

“There are plenty of families. Now you add into that COVID (and) they want places where they can safely walk their children or walk themselves or jog,” said Horsburgh outside his home which has a large sign reminding motorists to slow down. “If we can make people more aware that there are times now people are getting out and getting more exercise to just be more aware.”

Horsburgh’s home isn’t the only one with a sign in the hamlet reminding motorists to slow down with several located nearby either on properties or on street signs.

But being a rural area, it’s not just pedestrians, cyclists or joggers on the roads.

Morley Forsyth was riding his horse along Dunmore’s Third Avenue and says while roads such as Township 120 can be a little sketchy for all users, in the hamlet hasn’t been too bad.

“I own a riding facility and we actually do lots of trail rides into town. We come to Rusty’s or ride to the Co-op and lots of times with young kids and beginner riders,” he said. “Very seldom have I been upset with a motorist. They’ve been respectful and given us room.”

The bylaw will be before county councillors again during their Oct. 6 meeting.
