MEDICINE HAT, AB – The cancellation of events this year has left some funds for the city to create a new grant.

The Community Vibrancy Grant will help promote new types of activities and events all while celebrate living in Medicine Hat.

General Manager of Community Development Leah Prestayko says the grant was created by pooling together funds from events that were scheduled to take place but were cancelled.

“So there were events that were scheduled to take place which the city was providing funding for to various community agencies and unfortunately those agencies had to cancel their events. So what we’ve done we’ve taken that money, pooled it together into the community vibrancy grant to create new ways for our people to apply for funding for activities and events.”

She says the city wants to see new types of activities and events that support recreation, leisure, arts, and culture in the city including on Canada Day.

Prestayko says groups who receive the funds will have until August 31 of 2021 to use the grant.

“So Tongue on the Post, Jazz Fest, Spectrum, as well as Canada Day. And if any of those groups or types of activities would like to apply for funding they’re more than welcome to. We will also be using this funding application process to accept applications for groups that might be interested in hosting Canada Day celebrations next year. So we’re asking them to apply through this process and they’ll be considered and evaluated as well.”

The deadline to apply is October 30, 2020.

The total amount available is about $40,000.
