Highway worker struck on hand by passing vehicle

Jul 28, 2020 | 9:47 AM

REDCLIFF, AB – A highway worker suffered minor injuries after being struck on the hand by a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The incident happened between Irvine and Walsh on July 24 just before 10:45 a.m. The westbound driver of the vehicle did not stop.

Redcliff RCMP are looking for the driver of silver Honda CRV with black trim, possibly with a damaged passenger-side mirror.

The lone occupant of the vehicle was described as an elderly female with grey hair and possibly wearing glasses.

Cpl. Alan Rivard of the Redcliff detachment says incidents in construction zones are a fairly common occurrence and that there are dozens of incidents each year that result in injuries and sometimes even deaths for construction workers or motorists.

“There are construction workers that are working on the road they’re either operating heavy machinery, they’re working with hand tools on the road itself there could also debris on the road, loose gravel chips, different things that are extremely hazardous,” he said.

Under the Traffic Safety Act, fines are doubled for speeding or any other violation in a construction zone, Rivard adds.

“The summer months are upon us which results in increased traffic on our highways and it also is an increase in our road construction season as well so we just want to remind motorists that they have to slow down in construction zones to ensure their safety and the safety of the construction workers that are present.”

RCMP are also reminding motorists to be extra cautious, obey all signs and construction zone speed limits, slow down and be prepared to stop at all times to ensure the safety of drivers, riders and workers.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Redcliff RCMP at 403-548-2222 or Medicine Hat police at 403-529-8481.
