MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat College’s newly established School of Health & Community Services will focus on their programs including nursing, paramedic, and social work.

The college announced the news this month that Dr. Harrison Applin will also be the new dean.

The new School of Health & Community services was also announced in July.

Applin was most recently the director of nursing professional practices with AHS.

He holds a PhD in Nursing, a Master of Education in Educational Policy, and a Bachelor of Science. He is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration from the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. His previous experience includes being in the military and served in NATO.

Applin believes the goal and vision he has for the college will move health and community services forward so it meets the needs of Medicine Hat and the region.

He says this is a good time to put Medicine Hat on the map for innovation.

“Especially with COVID. I mean people don’t or truly don’t understand what the impact of COVID is yet because we’re sort of still in that cycle. But health, health careers, and community services careers you need them in sort of a forward visionary community and there’s no reason that we can’t do it up in Medicine Hat because we can.”

Applin is originally from Newfoundland and has a passion for rural health and education.

He begins his role at Medicine Hat College on August 17.
