Stampede to host three pancake breakfasts this week

MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s not Stampede Week without pancakes and even though the main attraction of Stampede isn’t taking place this year, pancakes will still be served.

Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede is hosting three pancake breakfasts this week — drive-thru style.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. hungry Hatters can pick up a to-go container filled with pancakes, sausage and syrup. The breakfasts will also come with individually wrapped cutlery and packaged juice.

The Stampede’s general manager says the group is glad it’s able to do something for the community during Stampede Week.

“We’re hopeful that people will come on out and come on back to the Stampede grounds even if it is just for a few minutes in a drive-thru and we’ll get a chance to say hi and wave and give people some pancakes, free pancake breakfast,” says Jim MacArthur, adding they’re ready to serve 1,000 breakfasts each day and asks people only get breakfast for those in the vehicle.

Based on the early reaction on the Stampede’s social media accounts there will be a good turnout at the breakfasts, MacArthur says.

Due to public health guidelines you can not park or get out of the vehicle in the immediate area and only enclosed vehicles can be served, meaning no walk-ups or bike or scooter riders.

MacArthur says everyone serving or otherwise helping at the breakfasts will go through a screening program before they start each morning and there will be masks, gloves and sanitizer so that everything and everyone is as safe as can be.

As usual, volunteers are the heartbeat of Stampede week, says MacArthur, and there will be between two and three dozen at the breakfasts.

“They’re such a dedicated group and they’re very excited about being involved and being back here at the Stampede grounds,” says. “Without volunteers, we just wouldn’t be able to make it and that’s certainly still the case this year so we really want to say thank you to them.”

MacArthur suggests the easiest way to get to the Stampede grounds and into the pancake traffic flow is from Dunmore Road where the Stampede has its signage. Drivers will be directed in through Gate 1 and then signage will direct people to one of four tents to pick up their breakfasts and then out through Gate 2.
