A financial support for Alberta apprentices will be boosted by 50 per cent this school year.

Under the Apprentice Training Award, eligible apprentices will receive $1,500 during the classroom instruction period. Since the program’s inception in 2016 apprentices have received $1,000.

The Alberta government says the funds are to help apprentices with costs such as tuition, books, material fees, tools, transportation and living expenses during their classroom instruction period, and will help about 3,300 unemployed apprentices continue their training.

“The path to a rewarding career is the skilled trades and our apprenticeship community, employers and educators know the importance of apprentices in our province,” said j’Amey Bevan, board chair, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board in a release. “That means supplying them with jobs and opportunities to attend technical training. We must retain our apprentices and support them to complete their chosen programs. This Apprentice Training Award has helped over 9,000 apprentices and it can help so many more.”
