City of Brooks eyes economic recovery as active cases of COVID-19 continue to dwindle

Jul 4, 2020 | 12:42 PM

BROOKS AB- A city hard hit by COVID-19 is now looking at new and innovative ways to spur economic growth.

An economic task force was formed recently consisting of business owners and representatives from different sectors to provide input.

One way the city is looking at bringing economic development is through a downtown revitalization project. The idea would turn 1st and 2nd street into one way roads. Brooks Mayor Barry Morishita said nothing has been decided as of yet, but the possibility will be discussed at Monday’s council meeting.

“We want to make sure the downtown business groups are consulted thoroughly and we want to understand what the general public’s opinion may be on an issue like this,” Morishita said.

Some other short-term ideas suggested by the group include business beautification loans. The program, run by Brooks Region Economic Development and Community Futures Chinook allows small businesses to apply for up to $10,000 in funding. Under the program, 80 per cent of the funding would consist of an interest-free loan and 20 per cent would be money available through a grant.

Development department reviews to make development easier, and a pathway to Lake Newell were among other ideas suggested.

“I think it’s really important for us to look at new ways of trying to make sure the economy in Brooks is strong and sustainable and that we have some new avenues for businesses and residents to grow, survive and succeed in this area,” Morishita said.

Active cases of COVID-19 in the city of Brooks has dropped to one, according to the most recent data provided by the province. In total, the city recorded 1119 cases of COVID-19 , 1109 recoveries and nine COVID-19 related deaths since March.
