Resources to support our loved ones during this time

May 25, 2020 | 2:51 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Canadian Mental Health Association of Southeast Alberta continues to see struggles during this time with isolation, anxiety, grief, and the unknown.

However, Executive Director Cori Fischer says they have seen a decline in calls since the increase in March and April.

She believes the decline is due to people wanting to focus on helping others.

Adding, it’s easier for people to offer help than to request help for themself.

Fischer says they will shift to offer more resources for individuals to help their loved ones, in the hope that those skills will transfer to everyone.

“How do I support my aging parents who are isolated at home, can’t potentially see their grandkids, feel like life is passing them by, a huge amount of anxiety with what if I get ill and what impact is that going to have on me? How do I support my children where their lives have been turned upside down, how do I support my spouse, my siblings, my friends?”

The local CMHA continues to offer one on one support for those who need it.

Whether that’s over the phone, virtual calls, or online support.

Fischer says they’re increasing their Zoom and webinar capabilities to at least have face to face conversations.

“Not everyone is comfortable with technology and the idea of talking to a complete stranger on the phone without physically seeing them which might be a deterrent.”
