COVID-19 update: Province confirms 18 new cases

MEDICINE HAT- The province of Alberta is confirming 18 new cases of the virus province-wide today (May. 23).

An additional person has died, according to the province, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 135.

There are 93 active cases and 1,127 recovered cases in the South Zone.

In Medicine Hat, the city has 38 confirmed cases of the virus, but two more people have recovered since the last update provided Friday. Of the 38 cases, six cases are active and 32 have recovered.

The province is reporting one new case in the city of Brooks. The city of Brooks has 1095 cases, 53 are active and 1035 cases have recovered. The number of deaths remains at seven.

The decline in the number of active cases has Brooks set for the reopening more businesses this Monday, along with the City of Calgary. Similar to other municipalities in the province, hairstylists and barber shops will be allowed to reopen. Coffee shops , restaurants, pubs and bars will also be allowed to reopen at 50 per cent capacity.

Elsewhere in the South Zone, Cypress County has 12 reported cases of the virus, four are active and eight cases are recovered.

In Newell County, there are 15 cases. Two cases are active and fifteen are recovered.

Lethbridge has 27 cases, 10 active and 17 recovered. Lethbridge County has one case, listed as recovered.

Nearby Cardston County is reporting 23 confirmed cases. Fifteen cases are active and eight are recovered.

Both the Municipal District of Taber and County of Forty Mile have two cases, each all of which have recovered.

Province-wide, there are 6818 confirmed cases of the virus. A total of 814 cases are considered active while 5,869 people have recovered.
