Brooks and Calgary get go-ahead for next phases of reopening on May 25

May 22, 2020 | 11:47 AM

Brooks and Calgary will be able to move to the next phase of their reopenings on May 25.

Hair salons and barbershops will be able to resume regular operations and restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs can reopen for table service at 50 per cent capacity.

On June 1, day camps and summer school will be permitted with limits on occupancy and post-secondary institutions, places of worship and funeral homes can reopen as long as they follow the public gathering limits already set out in public health guidelines.

Premier Jason Kenney said the decisions were made based on the advice of Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

“While this is positive news for many it doesn’t mean that we’re out of the woods yet,” said Kenney.” COVID-19 still poses a very real risk and we must all continue to act responsibly and look out for one another.”

Kenney urged Albertans to continue to practice physical distancing, enhanced hygiene and wearing a mask where physical distancing isn’t possible.

The premier added the government has no plans to make wearing a mask mandatory, but highly recommends people do so.

He cited a Canadian Federation of Independent Business report that more businesses are open and operating in Alberta than in any other province.

Kenney said that underscores “we did this the smart way, in a targeted way. With fewer restrictions impairing our economy but better results than all of the large population Canadian provinces.”

There will not be an in-person update from Dr. Deena Hinshaw today but the numbers will be updated online later today.
