Property Tax Rebate Program will cost city of Brooks $310,000

BROOKS — Brooks city council has agreed to keep tax rates for residential and farmland properties at 2019 levels.

It’s part of a plan to help soften the impact of COVID 19 in the community.

Commercial and industrial properties in Brooks will see a five per cent reduction to help support local business feeling the economic pressure from the pandemic and diminished oil prices.

Rebates will appear automatically on tax notices, and property taxes in Brooks will be due on October 1st.

The Property Tax Rebate Program will result in a loss of almost 310,000 for the city of Brooks, but council believes it’s important and justified in what it called unprecedented times.

The city is also creating an Economic Recovery Task Force from various sectors to develop ideas and programs to create jobs and opportunities for further growth, but cautions this work won’t be done overnight.
