CFL could resume play in September, changes announced to Grey Cup games

TORONTO, ONT – The Canadian Football League (CFL) has announced its plans for this year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the league has suspended play since March.

Now, Commissioner Randy Ambrosie says the earliest they could return to play is this September for a “shortened but meaningful season.”

“Please note that we are not announcing or promising a return this fall. We are just letting our fans know this remains one of the remaining possible scenarios for 2020. A cancelled season is also possible. Again, it’s too soon to make a sure call at this point.”

As for the championships, the CFL stated that they will not be able to host a traditional Grey Cup and Grey Cup Festival.

Instead, the league has announced a change in pans.

If they are able to resume play this year, the 2020 Grey Cup Game will be determined by a “win and host” model where the team with the best regular-season record will host the finals.

“This gives all nine CFL teams a shot at hosting the Grey Cup in this unprecedented year.”

The Grey Cup could be moved to December if needed.

The plan for next year’s Grey Cup remains the same – it will be hosted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

As for 2022, Ambrosie announced that it will be hosted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
