‘The best of both worlds’: Residents opt to camp at home this May long weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With provincial campsites closed until June 1, some Medicine Hat residents opted to camp at home to kick off what is often the start of summer camping season.

It was all part of an initiative created by Tourism Medicine Hat.

Karen-anne Cherwonogrodzky heard about the event on social media and decided to give it a go.

She put up her tent trailer in her backyard, and spent the entire long weekend in the great outdoors.

” I’ve enjoyed it. It’s been a good break. It makes me feel like I’m actually on holidays. I’m supposed to be on holidays right now. I was supposed to be out of the country in Devon at a rock and lapidary event, but this is something different so it makes me feel like I had a little holiday,” she said.

Cherwonogrodzky has been camping ever since she was a young child.

“I love sleeping outside. I find I sleep better outside in the fresh air and I love the wind rustling through the trees,” she said.

Camping at home does come with own set of benefits, according to Cherwonogrodzky.

” You get the best of both worlds so if I was camping I would be heating up my water and cleaning my dishes outside, but I don’t do that here I just sneak inside,” she said.

A seasoned camper herself, she has some advice for those looking to do some backyard camping with their family this summer.

” It’s easy to just put up a tent in your backyard, if you know you have enough grass area. Just make sure you move it around once in a while so you don’t kill your grass, “she said.

Camping at home also doesn’t have to take a bite out of your wallet if are just starting.

“You don’t have to have all the fancy gear or whatever. You can use a little hibachi for roasting marshmallows or making smores , or hot dogs so you don’t have to have everything that you would normally have at a campsite,” she said.

Despite the rain Monday morning, campfires, watching the stars and eating delicious camp food were just some of the highlights of her backyard camping adventure.
