Time to applaud volunteers

April 19th- 25th was National Volunteer Week and the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who volunteer their time to our community in order to make a difference.

At the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, volunteers work year-round and the generosity of their time is greatly appreciated. They are one of the many faces you see at our gift shop, annual bake sale, pull ticket booth, and other events held throughout the year. They are integral to our success.

Why Volunteer? The best answers to that question comes from our volunteers themselves. Sharon, who volunteers on Wednesdays, says: “It warms my heart to be able to give my time to help at the Medicine Hat Hospital Gift Shop & other areas in the hospital. I cherish the interactions & relationships I have made, as well as what I have learnt over the years. It is not only a benefit to the hospital but also a fulfillment to me.” Another volunteer who works the Gift Shop Cart that travels to different departments of the hospital believes that “Volunteering at the Hospital has so many rewards. To help brighten someone’s day with a smile and chat whilst they are being hospitalized is extremely rewarding. I visit the wards and enjoy meeting and listening to anyone that feels able to do so. I have volunteered at other places but I do have to say that the hospital does the best job of making you feel very valued and an important member of the team.” Lastly, Sue, a gift shop volunteer, says “I love volunteering at the Gift Shop! That’s my way of giving back to the community. It’s also nice to meet the other volunteers and make new friends. I find talking to the patients that sometimes just need a friendly voice very rewarding A little kindness goes along way! I’m looking forward to getting back and seeing everyone again!”

We look forward to working, face to face, with all our volunteers again in the future. Right now, they are doing their part to help flatten the curve and they are staying home, washing their hands, and maintaining social distancing. It can be hard to have a disruption in routine, but our volunteers reminded us that we should be grateful for what we do have. Many volunteers mentioned how grateful they are for technology that allows them to keep in contact with their family while they are separated at this time and for the wonderful walking trails found in the city that allows them to remain active and in the sunshine. Most importantly, they are grateful for all the people who are continuing to work during this time, from health workers, police and firefighters, to grocery store employees.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers; we are proud to have you as part of the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation family.
