Second-degree murder charge laid in Lethbridge death

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A man has been charged in connection with a death in Lethbridge last week.

On Monday, April 27 at approximately 6:55 a.m., Lethbridge Police responded to a report of an injured man at an apartment building along the 1200 block of 4 Avenue South.

Police say they attended the scene, along with EMS and found a deceased 43-year-old man inside one of the units of the building.

According to LPS, an investigation by members of the Criminal Investigation Section found that during the evening of April 26, the man had been inside his apartment socializing with acquaintances when a physical altercation broke out, resulting in the victim sustaining fatal injuries.

Police say that when a friend attended the victim’s apartment the following day, they found him unresponsive and called for help.

Officers subsequently identified a suspect and made an arrest on May 1 without incident.

27-year-old Jason Paul James Crane Chief of Lethbridge has been charged with second-degree murder.

Crane Chief is currently remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on May 11, 2020. LPS stated that the identity of the victim will not be released.
