Don’t Quit: Library video shows the power of words

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Some of Medicine Hat’s most prominent citizens have a message for residents – Don’t Quit.

Mayor Ted Clugston, Police Chief Andy McGrogan and Fire Chief Brian Stauth are among those reading lines from the poem “Don’t Quit” in a video posted to social media today by the Medicine Hat Public Library.

Heather Bach, executive director of the Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation, Jen Grier from MY96 and chief librarian Ken Feser are also featured in the video, as are others in the library community.

Feser said the video helps mark National Poetry Month and gives a boost during these tough times.

“We feel the community needs a bit of a lift and the subject of the poem seemed to be appropriate about sort of standing tough in hard times. And plus we are very interested in building community and so having community leaders and members of the community come together to do this was a special thing for us.”

The poem and video end with the final word from celebrated Medicine Hat author Mark Sakamoto – “It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.”

“Don’t Quit” was written by John Greenleaf Whittier.

Feser also gave an update on library operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The library closed its doors in mid-March and Feser said they’re trying not to give up the fight and continue with services.

“We do believe strongly that we still have a role and want to be there for Hatters even as we’re in a reduced situation. With the building not open we’re still doing material pickup and online programming such as the poem.”

The library was forced to layoff staff last week, something Feser said was very painful but they are working with the union to make sure everyone is taken care of.
