Mar 7, 2020 | 9:04 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB.-The show must go on, and that’s exactly what is planned for the Sunshine Home & Garden Show after an unexpected evacuation Saturday evening.

Jim MacArthur, general manager of the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede told CHAT News Today, fire crews were called to the Cypress Centre at around 5:15 p.m. Saturday due to a report of smoke.

“When the trucks got here, they isolated the problem to one room, a mechanical room at the front of the Cypress Centre, and have isolated it to one small furnace that services one of the meeting rooms.” MacArther said.

While a cause is still being investigated, MacArther told CHAT News Today an electrical moter may have contributed to the smoke.

Alarms reportedly rang out and dozens were told to leave.

In the midst of the emergency, Lisa Kowlachuck, executive director of the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce said their first priority was safety.

“Everyone was very cooperative, we were able to get the buildings evacuated very quickly, and make sure that everyone was safe and of course communication in making sure all the exhibitors and the public is aware of the situation and that it will be business as usual tomorrow.”

The Sunshine Home and Garden show runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
