Update: First presumptive case of COVID-19 in Alberta in the Calgary zone

Mar 5, 2020 | 5:00 PM

EDMONTON, AB — The government has confirmed Alberta’s first presumptive case of the novel coronavirus is in the Calgary zone.

Testing has not been confirmed at the national lab.

The province’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says it is a woman in her 50’s and she contracted the virus while aboard the Grand Princess Cruise Ship in California.

She returned on February 21 and has been isolated at home since February 28 and is expected to make a full recovery.

Public health officials are reaching out to all individuals who may have been in contact with this person, assessing their health, and instructing them to stay at home for 14 days after their last contact with this person.

Dr. Hinshaw asks anyone in Alberta who was aboard the Grand Princess Cruise in the last two weeks to please stay at home until 14 days have passed since they left the cruise, even if they are feeling well.

The government says despite this case in the province, the risk to contract the virus is low.

The number of Canadian cases of the novel coronavirus has now surpassed 40, with B-C announcing 8 new cases of COVID-19 identified in the province.

According to the news release, “public health measures are already being put in place to contain the virus and protect Albertans.”

More details will be released as they become available.

More to come.
