MEDICINE HAT, AB – When it comes to travel precautions with the spread of COVID-19, a local travel specialist says she hasn’t seen any decline when it comes to her clients heading out on holidays.

Ruth Malcolm with The Travel Agent Next Door has been in the business for over 40 years. She says COVID-19 is a similar situation as in the past with SARS, Ebola, and Zika Virus.

“The first overall start of any virus will take you by shock, to begin with, but when you actually look at the numbers on the normal flu and then coronavirus you see how that adds up.”

She says if you have bad respiratory and or other health concerns, “It will be getting to you more than it would be myself who is in perfect health.”

“So it doesn’t scare me by any means that’s for sure.”

Malcolm is telling her clients that if they have respiratory problems not to travel.

“Other than that, travel as normal, stay away from China.”

Malcolm says she has had a few clients ask about coronavirus and traveling.

“I have a client that’s looking at Italy right now. She asked do you think it’s best to book now or hold off, and I said that it’s best if she makes that decision.”

Malcolm says she would travel to Italy right now. “It’s a beautiful country and the chances of you getting the coronavirus is very low if you don’t have respiratory problems.”

According to Malcolm, she has had no clients cancel their trip.

“Just clients phoning to see if there have been any changes to their itinerary at all. None have canceled so far.”

As for medical and travel insurance, she has noticed a big increase in people purchasing insurance. Even if travelers have insurance through their credit card.

“It’s wise to get extra insurance on top of that to make sure you are covered.”

Malcolm says to still travel, still have fun, but just be cautious.
