City keeping eye on creek levels

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The warm temperatures in Medicine Hat have led to the city reminding residents to be aware of the water levels in creeks.

In recent days, the City says both Seven Persons Creek and Ross Creek have both seen higher water levels following the recent melt.

“Usually, this time of year, we start to see higher levels in the tributaries to the South Saskatchewan River,” said Dave Genio, superintendent of the city’s parks and recreation department.

Genio says the water has been the highest near the Saamis Archaeological Site and near the trails by Scholten Hill. He adds there has been no reports of overland flooding yet.

He adds residents should always be aware of the water levels, especially as spring begins to arrive.

“Our biggest concern is to just inform the general public to make sure that they’re being cautious as they’re enjoying our park systems near or around these tributaries, and just be aware that water levels can rise at any time,” Genio said.

With the warm temperatures in Medicine Hat, Genio adds ponds around the city are not safe to be on.
