LETHBRIDGE, AB – The future of a fund which benefits victims of crime in the province as well as community and police-based support services for them will be known shortly, says Alberta’s justice minister.

Minister Doug Schweitzer said Monday the province is, “continuing to work with stakeholders on the future of the Victims of Crime Fund. We’re engaged with stakeholders right now and you’ll hear more announcements on that in the days to come.”

Last week’s provincial budget outlined that the financial benefit program from the fund, which provided direct support to victims of violent crime recover, would be replaced by service-based programming.

Asked about the dismantling of the program, Schweitzer said, “stay tuned for more details about the future of the Victims of Crime Fund.

The Victims of Crime Fund is financed by a 30 per cent surcharge on fines from police or those leveled by the courts with the financial benefit program portion of that fund also paying for funerals for those killed in criminal acts and gave additional support for those who suffered brain injuries due to a criminal act.

The province slashed expenditures from the fund in Budget 2019 with community organizations stating a moratorium had been placed on new funding. Though, that funding was restored and increased in Budget 2020.

The minister didn’t directly address whether this moratorium exists, though, the city’s Senior Citizen Advisory Committee has publicly stated they have been prevented from applying for an elder abuse coordinator because of it.
