MEDICINE HAT, AB – TC Energy officials presented what they say is a very early discussion of a Medicine Hat Looping Project 2023.

City council heard more about the proposed project at their meeting Monday night.

TC Energy says the purpose is to meet the increased demand in natural gas in Medicine Hat and surrounding areas.

The project would be located approximately 5 kilometers north of the City in the Municipal District of Cypress County.

The proposal includes about 64 kilometers of 24-inch diameter pipeline.

Mayor Ted Clugston says it’s a competitive industry, “So we’re not sure which way we’re going to go.”

“But I think we have outlined the fact that the city of Medicine Hat will be needing more gas. We are producing less and less ourselves and we’ve seen some growth in industries of course that are burning gas and our electric generation plant, of course, needs gas, so we welcome this and are excited about it.”

TC Energy says the project is also subject to regulatory approvals.

If all goes according to plan, the line would be slated to be in service by 2023.

Clugston adds, there shouldn’t be a problem with this line.

“I mean, people in Alberta are fairly reasonable. However you’re looking at what’s happening in B.C right now with the natural gas line as well, so who knows.”
