MEDICINE HAT, AB – Students at Herald School in Medicine Hat took a stand against bullying today by wearing their best pink shirts.

Pink Shirt Day has been running for 13 years across the country and its purpose is to encourage being kind to others and show that bullying is unacceptable. Vice principal Kaylen Christiansen says that staff and students were very excited to wear their pink shirts and spread the message of being kind and helping others by participating in the week-long activities that are taking place at the school to highlight the school’s message of inclusivity.

“We’ve been having five days, so this is our third day, of kindness activities. Yesterday was bee-kind. Everyone dressed up as bees and yellow and things like that and they love that” she said. “And then it was pajama day also the next day before that, all under the umbrella of kindness. The kids jump right in to show their kindness and to show that they’re all in for this.”

Teachers held discussions with their classes about the importance of being kind and helping out those around you whenever you can. Students also wrote notes to their fellow classmates and posted them to their lockers anonymously as a way of showing how easy it is to perform a random act of kindness.

One student that took this message to heart was grade six student Julian Gallegos, who is learning the negative impact bullying can have and what you can do for someone who may be struggling.

“You can help them with anything they’re having a problem with like any school problems or home problems as well, which those could get deep into your mind.”

The students at Herald School have only two more days of fun to look forward to before the week concludes, but they are certain that everyone in their school will embody the message that Pink Shirt Day embraces for the rest of the school year.
