Tigers frozen out by ICE in Family Day matinee

Feb 17, 2020 | 5:37 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers learned the hard way Monday that games can turn 180 degrees at the drop of a hat.

Hosting the Winnipeg ICE for a Family Day matinee contest at the Canalta Centre, the Tigers allowed two goals in 1:14 to open the third period to see their lead vanish in a 4-2 loss.

Michael Milne opened the scoring for Winnipeg just under four minutes into the first period, getting behind the Tigers defence and cutting to the net on the backhand.

The Tigers were able to get that goal back around 10 minutes later however, as Ryan Chyzowski netted his 26th of the season to tie it at 1-1.

Chyzowski wasn’t done there however, as he was able to beat the first intermission buzzer with 33 seconds remaining to give Medicine Hat their first lead of the afternoon.

Medicine Hat was able to keep that 2-1 lead through the second intermission, but the ICE came out of the break hungry and executed a perfect 3-on-2 that was finished off by Owen Pederson.

ICE forward Jackson Leppard added his 20th of the season just 40 seconds after Pederson’s early period marker, fully swinging the momentum back on Winnipeg’s side.

The Tigers peppered Winnipeg netminder Liam Hughes with 17 shots over the final period, however their final push was stymied with an Isaac Johnson empty net goal.

Hughes made 34 saves on the afternoon to earn the two points for Winnipeg, while Mads Søgaard allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Tigers net.

Falling in both of their games over the long weekend and dropping three of their last four, the Tigers now hold a 34-18-2-1 record and remain four points behind Lethbridge for second in the Central Division.

Medicine Hat’s next game doesn’t come until Friday night, continuing their three-game home stand against the Tri-City Americans at 7:30 pm.
