Residential fire sprinkler subsidy up for decision at city council meeting

Feb 17, 2020 | 12:15 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A recommendation that has sparked debate at two city committee meetings will land in front of councillors at Tuesday’s council meeting.

The recommendation is for the city to establish a residential fire sprinkler incentive program to subsidize up to $2,500 the cost of installation of the system in homes being built in the new Coulee Ridge subdivision.

A condition for the approval of the subdivision was that homes were built with residential fire sprinkler systems due to fire department response times to the community would fall outside established time frames.

During the Feb. 10 Public Services Committee meeting, councillors Jim Turner and Kris Samraj expressed strong opinions in favour and against, respectively, against the incentive program.

The matter was also brought up at the last Municipal Planning Commission meeting.

The first phase of the project would cost upwards of $100,000 and be funded through the city’s contingency fund. Subsequent incentives would cost an estimated $550,000 for the rest of the homes in the subdivision over five to ten years.
