Special teams dry up for Tigers in Edmonton, crowned by Oil Kings

Feb 15, 2020 | 10:38 PM

EDMONTON, AB – Rookie Dylan Guenther caused the Medicine Hat Tigers fits on Saturday night, picking up a three-point night for the Edmonton Oil Kings in a 5-2 victory over the ‘Tabbies.’

Jumping out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, the Tigers allowed four unanswered goals from the division-leading Oil Kings in their first game of the long weekend.

Jonathan Brinkman scored his third goal of the week 12:09 into the contest, however Medicine Hat’s lead was short-lived.

Just 22 seconds after Brinkman’s marker, Edmonton countered with David Kope’s 12th goal of the season to tie the contest at 1-1.

Following a tripping call a few minutes later against Tigers goaltender Garin Bjorklund, the Oil Kings took their first lead of the night with a power play goal from Ethan McIndoe.

Edmonton capitalized again on the man advantage a little over eight minutes into the second period, extending their lead to 3-1 off Ethan Cap’s fourth of the year.

Jake Neighbours needed just 78 seconds out of the intermission to give the Oil Kings some breathing room in the third period, making it a 4-1 lead for the home side.

Tigers defenceman Dylan Plouffe netted an unassisted marker three minutes later to give Medicine Hat a bit of life down 4-2, but an empty net goal from Guenther erased all hope of a comeback from the orange and black.

Medicine Hat struggled mightily on special teams, allowing a pair of shorthanded goals while going 0-for-4 on the power play themselves.

Bjorklund lost his third straight start with four goals allowed on 27 shots against, while Edmonton’s Beck Warm earned the ‘W’ with a 29-save showing.

Unable to make up any ground in the Central Division race, the Tigers now hold a 34-17-2-1 record and remain four points behind the Lethbridge Hurricanes for second place.

Medicine Hat wraps up its weekend with a rare matinee game on the holiday Monday, hosting the Winnipeg ICE at 2:00 pm at the Canalta Centre.
