University of Calgary searching for meteor videos from Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Researchers from the University of Calgary are asking for the public’s help to locate any potential meteorites after a meteor was seen in Alberta a week ago.

Based on their calculations, it is believed to be near Medicine Hat.

The meteor flash was captured on door bell and dashboard cameras near Edmonton and Calgary on Saturday, February 8 at 5:07 p.m.

Videos from the American Meteor Society are seen below.

The researchers say it’s extremely rare to see a bright flash like the one on Saturday during daylight hours, which indicates a larger meteor.

Ciceri believes the meteor passed Lethbridge, based on the trajectory, and meteorites may have landed north of Medicine Hat.

He adds they’re looking for any visuals of the meteor from the Medicine Hat area to help narrow down the search.

“We would like really to have a video from Medicine Hat, because it’s the most important location,” Ciceri says. “Because the fire ball was probably west to east in its trajectory, and it was exactly north of Medicine Hat, so it would constrain the trajectory, having a video from Medicine Hat, and someone who saw it from Medicine Hat.”

Anyone who has video is asked to send it to Ceceri by email at fabio.ciceri@ucalgary.ca.
