WINNIPEG, MB – Liam Hughes was simply spectacular Saturday for the Winnipeg ICE, frustrating the Medicine Hat Tigers at every turn.

Hughes stood on his head for 39 saves at Wayne Fleming Arena, handing the Tigers a 4-1 loss in Medicine Hat’s final game of their Manitoba road trip.

Medicine Hat dominated the opening 20 minutes with 16 shots on the ICE, however a late period goal by Reece Harsch was able to give Winnipeg the lead at the intermission.

The ICE doubled their lead to 2-0 with less than four minutes remaining in the second period with a Peyton Krebs rebound being picked up by Michal Teply for his 22nd goal of the season.

Tigers captain James Hamblin was able to cut the Winnipeg lead to one with 15 seconds left in the second though, stepping off the bench and sniping a Lukas Svejkovsky pass to beat Hughes.

Winnipeg’s Jakin Smallwood restored his club’s two-goal lead midway through the third frame after a shot rebounded off the end glass, resulting in a fire drill in the Tigers crease.

Medicine Hat pressed late with Garin Bjorklund on the bench, but Teply would pot his second of the night into the open cage for the insurance marker for Winnipeg.

Bjorklund’s record dropped to 17-4-1 with the loss after allowing three goals on 28 shots, while Hughes was named the night’s first star.

Both Medicine Hat and Winnipeg struggled on the power play, with the two clubs combining to go 0-for-9 on the man advantage Saturday.

Finishing their Manitoba road swing with a 1-1 record, the 33-16-2-1 Tigers now sit two points behind the Lethbridge Hurricanes for second spot in the WHL’s Central Division.

The Tigers are back home on Tuesday night to face the visiting Pats at 7:00 pm in just the second meeting of the season between Medicine Hat and Regina.
