Mohawks & Kwahommies go 4-for-4 in Saturday sweep over Cardston

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Saturday was a good day to be a member of the Medicine Hat High School basketball family, as all four teams earned decisive victories over a strong divisional opponent.

It was a banner day for the Mohawks and Kwahommies, earning four out of a possible four victories over the visiting Cardston Cougars at home.

The Mohawks senior boys (2-3) were led by a 27-point performance by senior and leading scorer Ethan Egert, earning a 107-86 victory over the Cougars to snap a two-game slide.

Grade 12 students Artchie Belza and Austin Walton contributed 23 and 14 points respectively in the win, while Grade 11 guard Aiden Gripp came through with 18 points himself.

Kwahommies sophomore Tori Kaczynski was the standout in the senior girls game meanwhile, dropping 21 points for the victorious MHHS side 66-53 over Cardston.

Seniors Hailee Parker and Gloria Lokbai also hit double-digits on Saturday night, picking up 16 and 10 point efforts to improve the Kwahommies record to 4-2 on the season.

It was a monumental upset in the junior boys ranks, as the Mohawks handed Cardston their first loss of the season 88-65 to move above .500 with a 3-2 record.

Guard Connor Appell was the lone Mohawk to pass 20 points in the early game, as he was followed in scoring by Evans Gryffin’s 16 points and double-digit efforts from Sebastian Perez and Jehan Robles.

As for the junior Kwahommies, they continued their early season domination with a 97-33 stomping of Cardston to remain undefeated at 6-0 to begin the year.

Every member of the Kwahommies was able to find the score sheet on Saturday, led by 15 points from Lexi Davidson and 12 points from Whitney Parker.

Both Kwahommies teams will be back in action on January 25 with home games against the Chinook Coyotes at 1:00 and 3:00 pm.

The Mohawks boys teams meanwhile are off until February 11 when they play host to Lethbridge’s LCI Rams for an evening double-header.
