Sports Year in Review – Athletic Accomplishments

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat athletes celebrated many accomplishments in 2019.

From personal bests, to championship victories, it was a big year for athletes in Medicine Hat.

Here are some of the biggest stories involving athletes in Medicine Hat.

Sage Watson

Watson took 2019 by storm, cruising to personal bests during her hurdling season and breaking a long-standing Canadian record in the 400m hurdles, and winning gold at the Pan-Am Games.

With the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo on the horizon, expect more from Watson as she works to qualify for the event.

Sarah Mickey

Redcliff’s Sarah Mickey was paralyzed at the age of 15, ending her dream of competing as a figure skater. Now, she has taken up the sport of seated discuss, setting a new record in the F-55 category, and finishing in fourth place at the Para-Pan Am Games.

Kirsti Lay

Lay, who won an Olympic Bronze Medal (2016 Summer Olympics, Brazil) in cycling pursuit and a Pan Am Games gold medal, announced in September she was retiring to focus on her young family.

Becky Martin

The former member of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s golf team had a successful year as a solo athlete. She became the first person from Medicine Hat to win the Alberta Women’s Amateur Championship, and won several other tournaments during the 2019 season, including the Connaught championship.

Shay Suchy and Amber Stigter

Suchy and Stigter, both members of the Rattlers women’s volleyball team, both set records this season.

Suchy is the all-time leader in digs in the ACAC, with 1,245 digs as of November, while Stigter set a Rattlers record for kills with 1,007.

Kendall Kuntz

In her final season with the Rattlers women’s basketball team, Kuntz scored her 203rd three-pointer, moving her into second all-time in the ACAC.
