MEDICINE HAT, AB — As snow and ice continues to accumulate this winter, Alberta Health Services is reminding residents that there are steps they can take to prevent slips and falls outside.

Dr. Shobhit Maruti, the medical officer of health for the South Zone, says winter tends to be the time of year AHS sees more hospital visits resulting from slips and fall.

“The spectrum of injury can be from more minor injuries, like bruises, to more serious things like fractures or more serious sprains and strains,” he said.

Maruti says they don’t want people to sacrifice spending time outside in the winter despite the risk of slips and falls, but says people need to plan based on the conditions.

“If you are going for a walk, just be careful,” he said. “(Wear) proper footwear, let someone know. If you need a walking stick or cane, have that. Avoid going out too much in the dark or when the sidewalks are slippery. In the unfortunate event you have fallen, have someone you can call to or reach out to get help from.”

Maruti adds it is also important to avoid distractions while out walking, such as talking on your phone or drinking coffee, saying it takes your attention away from your surroundings and could also have an impact on your balance and your ability to prevent a fall from happening.

AHS also recommends taking shorter steps on ice and keeping your arms at your sides while walking over ice to improve balance.
